Masonite is a type of hardboard, also referred to as HDF or high-density fiberboard, a type of fiberboard. As opposed to MDF or medium-density fiberboard.
How do you use gesso Masonite panels?
Prepare the panel/board:
- Lightly sand the smooth side of the panel.
- Apply one layer of gesso in horizontal strokes across the panel using a soft brush (I use an Oriental Hake brush)
- Use a roller if desired (this changes to an even ‘stippled’ texture)
- Allow to dry.
- Lightly sand (if you want a smooth surface)

Masonite is manufactured with a protective surface that must be scuffed first. A light sanding is generally enough. Acrylic gesso sticks better to the resulting surface and I have no worries about losing a painting because the priming fails.
